Bumper2Bumper - a car quilt

Is it just me?

Or have you ever noticed how very few quilt patterns are geared toward boys?

I know my son always loved any toy with wheels - cars, tractors, trucks. My daughter also played with dinky cars, but for her the fun was in lining them up and practicing counting, not pretending to drive them. So although this design is suitable for a boy or a girl... I think of my son and how much he loved - and still loves - anything with wheels!

I posted this photo below, of my completed blocks, to Instagram. And more than one person thought those were stacks of quilts on the top of the cars! That would make for a really cute idea. Talk about a Trunk Show!

Although I had toyed with the idea of using solids, I ended up choosing to use a lot of random prints from my stash - reds, blues, greens, yellows and oranges - and a few black and white and grey prints thrown in for interest.

The quilting is organic wavy lines using my walking foot. And plain white Gutermann thread both on top and in the bobbin. I chose to bind this little quilt in black - to match the wheels and to provide a strong frame.

The backing is from the Urban Artifacts collection by RJR Fabrics, which you can view here.  I am simply in LOVE with this print! The colours, the dots, the flowers and the text. It is just such a fun print!

The "Bumper2Bumper" quilt finished at 38" x 43"
and was the 26th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels
ordered from Ikaprint.

So lovely to see your Bumper2Bumper quilt all spread out and finished. I've been enjoying pulling fabric for this one and I love how it is a great stash buster. Just love this pattern - thank you, Lorna :)!

I love this design, Lorna! Too bad my boys have all outgrown their fascination with cars and trucks :)

I can see toy cars being pushed round this, and their colours matched to yours. Lovely design, again you are a whizz at this. And the stacked ones on the "roof-rack" so to speak, love that photo.

You are right that there are not as many cute boy quilts as girl quilts, but you definitely started evening the scale with this one. It is so adorable!!

Yes, it does seem not as many quilts are designed for boys. Your is awesome! What an adorable pattern, excellent for a young or older boy and even a grown man. Perfect!

Wouldn't one of these blocks look cute with a Christmas tree tied on top? Would make an adorable pillow!
